Surge Protectors protect your transmission lines

Mobile communication systems are constantly at risk of being adversely affected or damaged by overvoltages, induced DC voltages etc. Protective devices such as surge protectors and DC Breaks are used to offset these external influences. Both have the job of safeguarding the connected system without interfering with its operation. Products from SPINNER are excellent suited for protecting mobile communication installations, due to their low PIM, attenuation and reflection. Our protective devices are available with a choice of 7-16, 4.3-10 or N connector.

Overvoltages are typically the result of electromagnetic induction because of events such as lightning strikes. For different applications, SPINNER offers surge protectors with gas discharge tube, λ/4 short-circuit loop or a combination of both in a hybrid surge protector.

A reliable protection against surges is given only by a proper installation and regular maintenance depending on the protector type. The maintenance intervals depend mainly upon the number and the strength of the impulse current impacts.

Surge Protectors with gas discharge arrestor can be used for all applications in the frequency range of 0 to 2.5 GHz. The RF power rating is limited by the spark over voltage of the discharge arrestor.

Type II - with quarter wavelength stub. This kind of surge protector is suitable for applications with single or multiple combined mobile communication bands (e. g. GSM900, GSM1800 and UMTS). DC transmission via the coaxial ports is not possible with this type. The stub can be orthogonal to or folded into the axis of the main line (In line design).

Type III – with quarter wavelength stub and DC Break. The internally separated inner conductor improves the protection effect and extends the bandwidth from 698 MHz up to 2700 MHz. Therefore, the whole frequency range of the most common mobile communication bands and W-LAN data transmission accord. to IEEE 802.11b/g or Bluetooth can be covered by one protector only. On the other hand, the DC break type is asymmetric, i.e. there are defined ports for the antenna and for the protected transceiver side.

Type IV - with quarter wavelength line and gas discharge arrestor. This surge protector design combines the advantages of both protecting techniques (DC transmission and low intermodulation). Therefore, it is also called a hybrid design. The bandwidth is 0 to 10 MHz and 698 MHz to 2700 MHz. Hence these surge protectors are suitable for DC and low frequency (LF) transmission and can also be used to transmit control signals (e.g. according to AISG) of antenna amplifiers and/or remote-controlled antennas.
